Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born in 1879 in Ulm, Germany. His father, Hermann Einstein, and his mother, Pauline Koch, were both Ashkenazi Jews. At the age of five, Albert began attending a Catholic elementary school. Later at the age of eight, he transferred to the Luitpold Gymnasium. He was a gifted student from the outset, particularly in mathematics. However, he was never enthusiastic about his classes and teachers. It is said that he taught himself Algebra at the age of twelve, developed his own unique proof of the Pythagorean Theorem, and wrote his first scientific paper around age 15. It was called, “On the Investigation of the State of the Ether in a Magnetic Field.”

In 1894, Einstein’s family left Germany and moved to Milan, Italy. A year later, Einstein began studying at the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, Switzerland. There, Einstein studied to become a math and physics professor. By 1896, Albert renounced his German citizenship in order to avoid military service. It was during his time in Zurich that he met Mileva Maric, a fellow mathematics and physics student at the Federal Polytechnic School. By 1903, she would become his wife.
